Making Our Dream A Reality

Thursday, November 29, 2007

Speaker: Pastor Tan (Service Sermon)
Date: 24 Nov '07

Mark 10:27- "But Jesus looked at them and said,
"With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.""

♥ In God's vocabulary, there is no lack or worry. That is what we need to establish in our lives because the Bible is always applicable to our lives.

♥ how do we do that? Because everything begins with our
mind, we need a renewal of mindsets! We must condition ourselves to think how God thinks.

#1 Truth: Nothing is impossible with God.

How God presents/introduces himself in the NEW&OLD Testament::
Luke 1:36-37 (new) Jeremiah 22:26-27 (old)

♥ We then tend to have doubts or be cynical about the promises of God over time.
Matt 17:20 - Having faith as small as a mustard seed; we can come into a place where this truth can be applied in our lives- healing, being debt-free,our studies etc...

♥ We need to get this in our spirit and it all begins with our belief system!
♥ Our carnal spirit is always drawn to the spirit of the world= negative attitude....which is why we are all saved from darkness into the kingdom of God.

#2: Whatever God has spoken, it will be done.
Isa 14:26-27
Mark 4 - Jesus calmed the storm and this is very typical of lives. we need to just trust and believe in His words.

Based on these 2 truths, what should we do:
A. Open yourself to God for a New Life.

Isa55:8-9
- We as humans, usually look at things on a natural and earthly way.
Isa 43:19= "Behold, I will do a new thing..."
♥ If we are not open for new songs/visions/purpose etc, then our spiritual life will lose it's passion!
Ezekiel 36:26
"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you: I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh."
♥ If you do not have one, start asking God for one in year 2008!

B. Give yourself to God for a higher life.

- Our life is likened to a seed; only when a seed dies(buried underground), then can we produce much fruits!
Learning from the 12 disciples, Matt 10:38-39 - they left everything and followed Jesus.
Hebrews 2:6,9
"...but we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone."

♥ Allow God to come into every aspect of your life; NO CROSS, NO CROWN!
The Cross is the place of exchange(of selfish ambitions); to start all over again, and believe God for a higher life.

C. Live your Dreams for others to have a better life!
What catches the attention of God?
Remember the widow with the two mites?
- God looks at the heart, it is the lowest, needy person that grasps His attention...It is NEVER the high and mighty.
♥ We need to change our mentality because God loves people! we are to help the down and out in the world, how? through our Time, Finances and even encouragement!
♥ Let's not pay attention to dream-killers and be a dream builder!

Our church will only become a dream center when you play a part! Let's not be passive, you can contribute!

Matt 27: 33-34
"Golgotha" - Place of a Skull
"Gall" - Bitter
♥ Jesus refused to be bitter even at the brink of death...

Exodus 15: 23,26,27,25
"Marah" - bitter
"Elim" - Place of clear and sweet water.

It takes one decision to move from bitterness to sweet, vice versa!
Hence we must guard our hearts and minds...start releasing forgiveness to people...

SERVICE SERMON - 17 Dec 07

[This picture isn't the clearest of all, we'll have to wait for Jialin's net to be working again. :) ]

This weeks' guest speaker is Pastor Phil Pringle. He painted a painting titled "The Last Supper". After much discussion with Miss Debbie Huang. We decided to do a little research on the 12 disciples of Jesus and post them here to share with you guys. To make it a little more interesting, I added another column called 'interesting facts'. Certain things you may not have known before. So enjoy!

Who are the 12 disciples of Jesus? Looking into the details, they were really all very ordinary people like you and me. Yet, Jesus called everyone of them to the table. Dining on the table is a symbol of communing with Jesus, having a personal relationship with God. The 12 of their characteristics also covers almost everyone on this earth, which we can definitely identify with. Thereby showing that each and everyone of us; are called to Jesus. :)

1) PETER
He's one of the very famous character in the bible. His original name wasn't Peter, it was Simon. Jesus changed his name to Peter which in greek is called "the rock". Jesus said: "Upon this rock, I will build My church upon." Peter had a brother named Andrew who was also one of the 12 disciples of Jesus. He was a Galilean fisherman before following Jesus. Among the 12 disciples, there 3 disciples that are closer to Jesus and Peter is one of them. On the mount of transfiguration and when Jesus raised Jairus' daughter from the dead, only these 3 disciples were present with Jesus alone. You can find him in all the 4 gospel. He was the only guy that Jesus called to walk on water with Him (Matthew 14:22–32). He loved Jesus wholeheartedly and yet he was also the one that denied Jesus 3 times. I believed that after he denied Jesus, he felt super remorseful and I guess he felt very lousy of himself too. In the final chapter of the Gospel of John, Peter, in one of the resurrection appearances of Jesus, three times affirmed his love for Jesus, balancing his 3 times denial, and Jesus reconfirmed Peter's position (John 21:15–17). Jesus restored Peter completely! After the resurrection of Jesus, in the book of Acts, you can see that Peter was a extremely important figure the early church days. Because of this guy, Peter, you and I can have the opportunity to be saved. He was the one that God spoke to bring the gospel to the Gentile world! *side track here! What is Gentile? It's everyone that is not a Jew which is me n you!* In the last chapter of the gospel of John, bible scholars believed that Peter was martyr by crucifixion head down. Jesus said these in John 21:18–19 ".. when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.”

Some interesting facts!!
1. He was married! Remember there's a verse in bible that Jesus healed Peter's mother-in-law in Capernaum. (Matthew 8:14–17; Mark 1:29–31; Luke 4:38)
2. When Jesus washed the feets of the disciples, Peter initially refused Jesus to wash his feet. John 13:7–9 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.” Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!” He's indeed quite a joker!
3. On the day that Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane. During the arrest, the disciples were trying to protect Jesus. Peter took a sword and cut off one of the men that tried to arrest Jesus. Later on, Jesus healed him and restored back his ear.
4. He was the first disciple to preach, to perform miracle, to raise the dead and to preach the gospel to the Gentiles.

2)JOHN
John has a brother, James, they were the sons of Zebedee. This John is also known as the Apostle John. He was one of 3 that were closer to Jesus. Among these 3 disciples, John is the closest to Jesus. At the last supper, John was the one that leaned on Jesus' chest. You can see that from Pastor Phil's painting. I believed that you'd seen the sketches that Pastor Phil drew of the individual disciples. He was like the "rock star". Bible scholars believed that he's the youngest disciple of all. John was the only disciple remained near Jesus at the foot of the cross on Calvary with Jesus’ mother and Mary Magdelene (John 19:25-27). He wrote 5 books in the bible. These 5 books have the recordings of his personal encounters of the works and the life of Jesus. He was put into the pot of oil to be boiled in Rome but he was unharmed and was exile to the island of Patmas which he wrote the book of revelation. He was the leader of the Jerusalem Church.

Some interesting facts!!
1. John wrote the book of revelation on the island of Patmos.
2. John the Baptist and John the Apostle are 2 different people, they are not the same person. John the Baptist was actually Jesus' cousin. Later was beheaded by King Herod. That's where you have the shortest verse in the bible. "Jesus wept"

3)JAMES
He is John's brother, the sons of Zebedee which also means the sons of thunder. Reflecting their tempers. James was also one of the 3 disciples that were closer to Jesus. James, like John, came from a fishing village of Galilee. James was one of the apostles who sought power and authority above the others, something that Jesus reproached him for:
"Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.” And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” They said to Him, “Grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on Your left, in Your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They said to Him, “We are able.” So Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink the cup that I drink, and with the baptism I am baptized with you will be baptized; 40 but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared.” (Mark 10: 35-40)
Jesus uses this occasion to repeat his lesson about how a person who wants to be “great” in the kingdom of God must learn to be the “least” here on earth, serving all others and putting them ahead of one’s own needs and desires. Not only are James and John rebuked for seeking their own glory, but the rest are rebuked for being jealous of this. James was beheaded.

4)ANDREW
The younger brother of Simon Peter. He was a disciple of John the Baptist. He was the first called the Apostle. He was the disciple that told Jesus about the 5 loaves and 2 fish when feeding the great multitude. He was the like evangelist. He brought the Greeks into the saving knowledge of Jesus together with Philip. Andrew also inquired of Jesus about the destruction of the temple in the book of Mark. He was crucified and he was the one who said: "I am not worthy to die the same way as my Savior."

5)PHILIP
First of all, this Philip is not the same Philip the Evangelist in book of Acts. Philip is very prominent in the book of John in the bible. Philip is person full doubts and unbelief, practically he was skeptical and cynical. He asked Jesus whether he could see the Father. Jesus answered him: "If you see Me, you see the Father. He who receives Me, receives the Father." Philip brought Bartholomew (Nathaniel) to Christ. Philip is believed to have been crucified.

6)BARTHOLOMEW
Sometimes he was also known as Nathaniel in the bible. His name actually means "God has given". Whenever you find Bartholomew in the bible, you can always find Philip. They are always mentioned together. It was Philip that witnessed to him under a fig tree and brought him to Christ. But nothing is said of Bartholomew. He was one of the disciples to whom our Lord appeared at the Sea of Tiberias after His resurrection. He witnessed the Ascension. Bartholomew went to India to preach the gospel and was crucified.

7)THOMAS
You can find him in John 11:16. Lazarus was dead and Jesus wanted to remove the tombstones and go into the tomb. Thomas has the last word: "Let us also go, that we might die with him" (NIV) Thomas was best known in John 20:24-29. he doubts the resurrection of Jesus and demands to feel Jesus' wounds before being convinced. He was trust through by a spear in India.

8)JAMES, SON OF ALPHAEUS
Sometimes he was mentioned as James the Less because the other disciple, James is greater in a sense. This was like to differentiate the both of them. James' mother has a name called Mary, she was one of those who went to Jesus' tomb to find Jesus. James had a brother who is Matthew. You can find James in these verses. Matthew 10:3-4; Luke 6:15; Mark 3:18; Mark 15:40; Acts 1:13; Mark 2:14-15. He was stoned to death in Jerusalem.

9)MATTHEW
He is also known as Matthew the tax collector and Levi son of Alphaeus. He should be very good with numbers and calculation. In the days of Jesus, a tax collector earn a very good living and back up by Rome. So Matthew must be very rich too. He was said to be despised by his own fellow countryman as he is the tax collector. He is believed to be literate and an educated writer. This may be the reason why he was able to write the detailed accounts of Christ’s spoken sermons including the long Sermon on the Mount. Matthew met Jesus at the tax office in Luke 14:26-27. He was serving money but now he served God. Matthew responded to his calling from Jesus by holding a BIG party to celebrate. He invited all his friends including fellow tax collectors, scribes and Pharisees. You can find in Luke 5:29-32. That's where you know the verse that Pharisees asked why Jesus fellowship with the tax collectors and the sinners. Matthew loved God so much that he's willing to let go of his material possession to follow Him.

10)SIMON THE ZEALOT
He was also known as Simon the Cananaen/ Canaanite. Nothing much was mentioned about him. He was martyr in Persia.

11)JUDAS ISCARIOT
He was in charged of the treasury in Jesus' ministry. We all know that he's the one that betrayed Jesus with a kiss for 30 pieces of silver. He loved Jesus but he loved money more. Just like the woman with the alabama flask of oil used it to wash wash Jesus' feet. Judas reacted in a way that it was such a waste because it cost a lot. This alabama flask of oil is actually perfume used only once in a lifetime, on the wedding day of a woman. Once it's broke open, it cannot to kept for later use. Not like our perfume with cap. You can image how much this perfume cost. It cost like a year's salary in Jesus' days. At the end of the day, he committed suicide by hanging himself on a three.

12)JUDAS THADDAEUS
I really cant find much details about him, apart that he's a worshiper, just like what Pastor Phil said.

Hope that you're blessed! :)

χάρισμα: Charisma

Monday, November 12, 2007

Copied over from Andre's Blog. :)

χάρισμα: Charisma

= the NEED for the SPIRITUAL =
Nov 1st week - service with Pst Ulf Ekman

χάρισμα, Charisma in original Greek text,
means gift or divine favor.

and so "the Charismatic Church"
fitly describes us who speak in tongues
as it is the gift from the Spirit because of the special favor..

together with the gifts of the Spirit,
the anointment of the Holy Spirit
brings upon the believe a power - grace..
the supernatural power to live a fruitful life..
this power brings LIFE..

Galatians 3:14
'that the blessing of Abraham
might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus,
that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.'

when the Holy Spirit comes into us,
He provides us with whatever we need.
strengths, wisdom, knowledge, and all...

1 Corinthians 2:5, 12
'that your faith should not be
in the wisdom of men
but in the power of God.'

'Now we have received,
not the spirit of the world,
but the Spirit who is from God,
that we might know the things
that have been freely given to us by God.'

but without the Holy Spirit,
we can only rely on our own strengths,
and thus we are limited...
that's exactly what Jesus meant here...

John 15:5
“I am the vine, you are the branches.
He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit;
for without Me you can do nothing."

indeed outside God we can do nothing..
of course we can do something in that we can do a lot physically..
but the point is that nothing we do can ever LAST..

John 15:16
'You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you
that you should go and bear fruit,
and that your fruit should remain,
that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.'

sometimes, some Christians say they don't know whether it's God..
well let me tell you that is not..
because when God works,
you just know it's from the Lord..
no confusion.. no mistaking it..

2 Timothy 1:7
'For God has not given us a spirit of fear,
but of power and of love and of a sound mind.'

it's as clear as how you know whether you have been born..
the moment the Holy Spirit enters you, you're born again in spirit,
and everything becomes crystal clear..
and then you'll never wanna let it go again..

Romans 8:35, 38~39
'Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution,
or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?'

'For I am persuaded that neither death nor life,
nor angels nor principalities nor powers,
nor things present nor things to come,

nor height nor depth,
nor any other created thing,
shall be able to separate us
from the love of God
which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.'

the worst thing I've ever known,
is to let that feeling go..
and maybe that's true for all other believers
who've once experienced the power of God..
to ever have the presence of God depart
is the closest thing to hell..
it's the most torturing thing next to nothing..
it's like there's a hole that's been stretched when God came in,
and the hole is now left empty... desolate..

you'd do anything to bring God back in..

2 Corinthians 5:8
'We are confident, yes,
well pleased rather to be absent from the body
and [in order] to be present with the Lord.'

that's why we Christians would be so careful,
not to grieve the Holy Spirit..
Holy Spirit is gentle, like a dove..
if you do not trust / obey Him,
He lets you have your way,
but from then He'll keep quiet..
He doesn't leave you but you don't feel Him any more..
yes.. that's why we are particularly watchful for our behaviors..

2 Corinthians 5:9
'Therefore we make it our aim,
whether present or absent,
to be well pleasing to Him.'

the difference in nature between the Holy Spirit and the world
can be made obvious by studying the ways they operate..

the world ORGANIZES an INSTITUTION; but
the Spirit FORMS a LIVING CHURCH.
the world CONTROLS the institution; but
the Spirit SHAPES the church.
in the world people are TOLD WHAT TO DO; but
in the Spirit things are REVEALED.
so in the world people do things when THEY HAVE TO;
but
in the Spirit people do things 'cos THEY WANT TO and 'cos they LOVE..
and so they do things with enthusiasm..

this is why the character of the Holy Spirit is so beautiful..
it is one thing to know about that..
but man, I tell you it's completely different
when you experience it for yourself..

there is one point in life when you learn to obey..
just so t
hat you can keep the presence of God with you..
because you love Him so much..
and that's how you learn to be more like Him...
as you really
strive, to do what He likes..

NOTICE: the Holy Spirit could come only because of Jesus' sacrifice!

Galatians 3:13
'Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law,
having become a curse for us
(for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”)

He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham
might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus,
so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.'

=> no sacrifice, no Holy Spirit in your life..

everyone has something he/she gotta deal with..
maybe a sin, a weakness, or an unhealthy part of life..
or it could be just something you hold dear to..
well God wants you to bring that onto the altar to offer it to Him..
because your slaughtering it brings death, then resurrection
and then the power of the Holy Spirit..

James 2:21, 22
'Was not Abraham our father justified by works
when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?'

'...faith was working together with his works,
and by works faith was made perfect...'

you see, this is important..
because although God called everyone
to have a relationship with Him..
but NOT every Christian loves Him strong enough..

Matthew 24:11-13
'Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many.

And because lawlessness will abound,
the love of many will grow cold.

But he who endures to the end shall be saved.'

to guard against that we need to prepare ourselves now..
and such sacrifices help to grow your love for Him..
because just as love leads one to sacrifice,
consistent sacrifices actually produce love..
and love and it alone can produce life..

and just as importantly, it's gotta be done out of revelation..
because only then the offering become a pleasing one..

1 Samuel 15:22
'So Samuel said:
“Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
As in obeying the voice of the LORD?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,
And to heed than the fat of rams."'

and only a heart of obedience draws the Holy Spirit near..
you could convince yourself you have to do it..
and do it out of an unwilling heart..
[and a real childish one I would say..]
but God wants you to do it out of ρημα, a rhema,
and out of love for Him..

Numbers 24:3~4
'Then he took up his oracle and said:
“The utterance of Balaam the son of Beor,
The utterance of the man whose eyes are opened,

The utterance of him who hears the words of God,
Who sees the vision of the Almighty,
Who falls down, with eyes wide open:
(and he blessed Israel).."'

with blind eyes, people utter nonsense..
but with opened eyes, revelations..
with closed ears, you listen to the sermon..
but with opened ears, you hear God..

it's your choice. make it today.

there's gonna be a revival..
we need to prepare ourselves
by being completely filled with the Holy Spirit..
there are many things we want to do..
and probably much more we need to do..
we need the power of the Holy Spirit
yes we do.. like deadly do...
right now.. as soon as possible..
no time to waste.. do all you can...
open your heart today..

Acts 3:19
'Repent therefore and be converted,
that your sins may be blotted out,
so that times of refreshing
may come from the presence of the Lord...'
